In 1617, Michael Maier’s Symbola Aureae Mensae was published with the frontispiece illustration known as Maria Prophetissa. In this illustration, Maria Prophetissa, who may also be known as the Maria of the Gnostic tradition, draws our attention to the alchemical process which appears to be coming to fruition before our eyes. This illustration is robust with alchemical symbolism.
